Choosing The Right Date For Your Wedding

Setting a wedding date is sometimes the first thing you do when planning your wedding. We share a few simple tips to help with your decision and make sure you make the right choice.

How Much In Advance Should I Plan For?

  • This all depends on your budget, guest availability and how well you manage your stress levels. You may want to have your wedding as soon as possible but take into account all the planning that goes into a wedding. It's stressful. Trust us. Leave enough time to plan comfortability. Don't rush your choice but be mindful that popular venues get booked years in advance. Create a shortlist of venues and enquire on dates early. Make a list of possible dates for you to work with.
  • Will you have interstate or overseas guests? Be aware that travel, time off work and accommodation needs take time to arrange. Not to mention the money aspect. Leave enough time for these guests to have this arranged.

What Season Should I be Planning For?

  • Spring, Autumn and Summer time weddings are generally more expensive than the low peak winter months. Be careful though. Summer time heat can be as bad as rain especially if you are wanting an outdoor ceremony or reception.
  • Weather may not affect your wedding if the majority of the ceremony and reception is indoors, however, be mindful of wedding photos - they are almost always outdoors.
  • Always have a contingency plan! (check out our blog about not letting mother nature impact your wedding HERE)

What's The Best Day Of The Week?

  • Choosing the right day of the week will also affect how your guests behave at your event. If you choose a Sunday wedding, for example, the price may be cheaper but your guests will most likely go home early as the majority will be working the next day. The same principle applies for weekday weddings. Be mindful of this if you want your wedding to be one big party.
  • If you really want your event to be one big party a Saturday Wedding is best but you are obviously paying a premium for that luxury. Take into account public holidays as you may be able to get away with arranging a Sunday wedding where Monday is a day off.

Picking An Actual Date:

You need to take a few points into consideration when finally choosing your date;

  • Does the date clash with another friends or family members planned event? A birthday may not take precedence over a wedding but a 50th birthday or major anniversary for a not-so-close friend may have them sending back a "cannot attend" RSVP.
  • Does the date clash with a major event, charity walk, trade show or public holiday? An event such as these may affect parking, accommodation or guest attendance.

One Last Point: Once you have made your decision - don't waste any time locking in the date and letting all your intended guests know to save the date. This will ensure they don't start planning their own event on the same day and will ensure they attend.

How To Avoid Mother Nature Ruining Your Wedding

Outdoor, Garden & Beach Weddings are becoming increasingly popular. The surrounding scenery adds to the atmosphere and creates the perfect backdrop for photos.

The downfall to outdoor wedding ceremonies? Mother Nature and the rain, winds, heat or cold she can unleash on your special day.

Don't let her get the better of your wedding.

Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind when planning an outdoor wedding.

Tip 1 - Always Have A Contingency Plan In Case Of Rain, Cold, Heat & Wind!

Outdoor weddings and events are very popular and can work very well if everything goes to plan. The problem is you can control most things to do with your big day but you can't always control the weather. Too many weddings and events have been ruined because there was no contingency plan for bad weather.

It will be money well spent if you book an alternative venue or organize a marquee just in case the weather turns bad. Guests have been known to skip out early from hotter-than-hot summer marquee weddings and improperly heated winter receptions.

Tip 2 - Consider Pests

Bugs, flies and mosquitos also swarm in certain areas during certain seasons. Consider pest control options to alleviate the problem or include bug repellent in guests' gift bags. If you are planning a sunset ceremony, make sure you know when to say your vows by checking sunset times in your area.

Getting the creature comforts right could make a big difference on whether your guests leave at 8pm or party all night.

Change The Look and Feel of Your Wedding

The lighting you choose for your wedding venue is super important and is quite often overlooked! Lighting will enhance your venue and wedding decor for the better. The right lighting can influence the way your guests feel depending on the colours you choose.

The cost of lighting will usually be one of the cheapest factors areas your wedding budget. However, it can make such a difference to your wedding experience!

Lighting Colour

So, what lighting colours should you choose for your wedding? In most cases, warm white lighting is the way to go. This can include uplighting on the walls, or fairy lights around your venue. Fairy Lighting has become increasingly popular for weddings! Warm white lighting can really help to create a romantic mood in your space. However, the key is setting it to the right brightness.

Coloured mood lighting is another popular option for weddings. Coloured lighting can be selected to match your wedding style/theme and enhance your decorating. However, we always suggest limiting the number of colours you use. The colours should match with your decorations as well as the linen colours on the tables.

Lighting Brightness

The brightness of your lighting is very important. Especially if you want your guests to dance! Quite often couples make the mistake of making it too bright over the dance floor. This usually results in guests being reluctant to dance.

To set the right mood, you want the lighting to be subtle and relaxing, to begin with. You will usually have your lighting brighter during dinner so that guests can see what they are eating. Later in the night, you will definitely need the option of dimming your lights. This will encourage guests to get up and dance!

6 Popular Wedding Lighting Ideas

Marcus's 40th Jungle Party

A wild jungle party that was a mix between jungle and nightclub to create the ultimate party atmosphere.

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

What a wild party this turned out to be for the many guests who also dressed up to enhance the theme. A warehouse converted into what could be called a jungle party with a twist. Lots of greenery and jungle props with a light up dance floor and lasers to really get the party rocking later in the night.

Live reptiles with podium dancers and a Michael Jackson show thrown in for good measure really kept the guests entertained all night.

“What a wild party! I had such a great night and we went to the very early hours of the morning as guests just didnt want to leave. The live snakes and everyone getting dressed up just added to a great party atmosphere.. Thank you to the Feel Good Events team for putting together an unforgettable party.”

BEHIND THE SCENES

This job was an easy bump in as regards to equipment but took alot of time to do the finer styling with lots of vines which can be very time consuming. The days of work to do the set up and pack up was so worth the end result to see everyone have such a great time.

This set up took approx 3 days to do with the amount of detail it had and costs around $20,000 for all decor entertainment and props.

Dina's Bat Mitzvah

Dina’s Bat Mitzvah was grand, incorporating lots of bright colours and textures making the room look like it was back in the 60’s.

The grooviest Bat Mitzvah in town!

The team at Feel Good Events created a colourful wonderland for Dina’s Bat Mitzvah! We started off by placing uplights around the whole room. We set each light to a different colour to make the space look bright and colourful! For low seating for the kids, we used our illuminated furniture. For the adults, the Feel Good Events team set up high bar tables and stools around the space. We also used inflatable stars and cones for some unique decorating touches. These were set up in front of the ‘LOVE’ Backdrop and along the walls.

After this, we installed UV lighting around the table. A UV face painter was part of the entertainment, so the lights would make the paint glow!

Styling & candy buffet was done by the talented Charlene from Design by Africa alongside Dina’s mum Shoshy who was also very hands-on when it came to ideas and the overall look of the room.

This is one party that will be the talk of the town for many years to come!

Want Feel Good Events to organise your next party for you? Get in contact with our expert party and event planners and they can help you out with every detail!

Prasanna & Tarini's Wedding

A romantic affair in the heart of Elsternwick, Prasanna & Tarini had a week of celebrations with there family & friends and the reception at Masion was the final celebration for the couple.

Romantic wedding Masion in Elstenwick

What a fabulous wedding to be a part of, we were so honored to help create a romantic backdrop to compliment the beautiful room at the Masion in Elstenwick.

Prasanna was our main point of contact during the planning process and made sure everything was perfect and organised for the big day.

After a big week of celebrations, the reception at the Masion was the final party to celebrate the wedding of Prasanna & Tarini. Using white velvet and soft chiffon draping we created the backdrop of the couples dreams. Also using warm white uplighting on the gathered sections on the backdrop.

A flower wall was added to the middle as the final focal point.

“Thank you so much for your email! Everything was so perfect, the backdrop added a whole new dimension to the venue. Emma did an amazing job on the day before the reception night, her attention to detail is to be commended. Tarini and I both felt that she took a big responsibility on herself to make sure it was just perfect for us, which we really did appreciate. Thanks again, it was such a pleasure working with you from the start to the end. We look forward to working with you again soon “
TARINI & PRASANNA

BEHIND THE SCENES

Access into the venue was easy and the venue staff are always lovely to deal with. Installation took 2 staff members, 1.5 hours and about an hour to pack down the following day. Lighting was all plugged into one power point so it was very easy for the venue to switch on.

This wedding cost approx $1,000 – $1,500 for all equipment, labour for set up and pack up

Jordan's 16th Birthday

Jordan’s 16th birthday Alice in Wonderland party theme.

Jordan’s Alice in Wonderland party

Jordan was turning sweet 16 and wanted a Alice in Wonderland theme for her party.

Shes used her dads businesses warehouse as the venue which as totally transformed.

This was one of the most elaborate set ups that Feel Good Events team had done as there was lots of props and styling equipment used along with the dance floor and lighting. The whole space was draped and then with the use of furniture, props lots of rigging covered in vines and props the theme came to life.

What a great result though with the 80 plus kids dancing the night away.

“Thank you to the team at Feel Good Events for such a great party set up.All my friends were blown away when they arrived and said it was the best party they had ever been too. Thank you so much.”

Don't Let Your Speeches Kill The Party

Depending on the occasion you may not be able to get out of holding a speech. But that's OK. Speeches can be great - if done right. Here are some quick tips to ensure your speeches don't ruin your party.

Note: This is specifically for party or event. Wedding speech format posting will come soon!

Should you even do a speech?

First things first. You need to decide whether you want to do speeches. The good things about making a speech - Provides another form of entertainment & chance to thank everyone for coming. The Bad? - Breaks up the party vibe. Preparing for the speech can also be hard work and can give yourself unneeded stress. If it's not a milestone birthday or event (21st, 30th, 40th Birthday etc) then our suggestion is to stay away from having a speech altogether. If there is going to be a cake involved then you can sneak in a few words and thank yous then. On the other hand your guests may be expecting a speech - especially if its a milestone event. Don't disappoint - always have something planned. Last thing you want is for everyone to be yelling "SPEECH SPEECH SPEECH!" and you have to start racking your brain for what to say.

Key Point - It always depends but always be prepared to do have one. Don't get caught out by your guests wanting a speech and you not being ready to say one.

When should the speeches happen?

If it's a particularly special party all your guests will be expecting a speech at some stage during the night and may hold themselves back from getting into the party mood until the formalities are taken care of. Our advice is to have the speeches as early as possible. Have the majority of your guests arrived? Are your besties there? If so what are you waiting for? Have your speeches early to allow the dancing and partying to start sooner without any breaks for the rest of the night. Getting away with the speeches has the added benefit of relieving the nerves if you're not a professional public speaker.

Key Point - Get it out of the way as early as possible. Your guests are there to party!

How long should the speeches be?

It doesn't matter how funny or entertaining your speech will be, your guests will begin tuning out after 8 minutes. This time limit is also in place for multiple speakers. 8 minutes max talking time in total! Our recommendation: Try for 5 minutes and no more than 2 speakers at once. If you want more speaker try you'll need to break it up. Have 1 speech before the cutting of the cake then the other 2 straight after. Make sure you keep speeches to the point. Your guests wanting to be thanked, have a laugh and get right back into the party. And let's be serious - most people are holding to the end for when they can finally drink the toast. Don't let them get thirsty!

Key Point - Try for 5 minutes. Anything over will have your guests tuning out - no matter how funny or entertaining you're making it.

Remember: Your guests are there to party - not to listen to you talk. Keep the party atmosphere strong and get the formalities out of the way early. Make it short and to the point (but entertaining of course). It'll take a long time to get the party atmosphere back if you break it up with speeches. Don't let your speeches kill you party!

DIY or Outsource Your Next Party?

DIY or Outsource

DIY or Outsource your next Party? Some people have more time than money, for others, that statement might be more appropriate reversed. Either way, when you're planning a party your end goal should always be to have FUN!

Here are some quick tips on whether it's worth doing tasks yourself or if it's better being delegated to someone else.

Prepare

Start things off by drafting up what needs to be done and estimate the time and money it will take to complete the tasks if you were to do it yourself. Include things to prepare for the event and what needs to be done on the night. Overestimate the timing and remember to factor in things that can go wrong. You may find that something you had planned to do yourself is better off being handled by someone else. Factor in price, convenience, reliability, and how stressful the task is.

Things like invitations, party decorations, goodie bags, food and thank you notes can all be done yourself but plan carefully and be realistic with your time constraints.

Focus On Yourself

Be mindful of your stress and sanity. Organising a party on your own can be a pain if you have a long list of To-Do's. You might have so much to do on the night that you miss out on your own party! We have seen time and time again the party host, or in some cases the bride, trying to do too much on the night of their event and missing out on all the fun.

Remember - It's a Party!

The host is the best person to get it going if you want dancing at your party. Don't allow the party to get off to a slow start because you are serving food or drinks or cleaning. Your focus should be having fun not playing butler. Although outsourcing food and other parts of your party may be expensive it may be worth it if it results in you relaxing and not worrying about anything at your own event. Ensuring you outsource tasks to reliable companies/people will have you enjoying your party a whole lot more. You will remember the good time you had over the money you spent in the future when you look back

The Price of Fun

Although outsourcing food and other parts of your party may be expensive it may be worth it if it results in you relaxing and not worrying about anything at your own event. Ensuring you outsource tasks to reliable companies/people will have you enjoying your party a whole lot more. You will remember the good time you had over the money you spent when you look back at your big day.

Party Psychology - Part 1

Throwing a party is hard work. All that planning, money and stress. Not to mention the anxiety it gives you. So why do we have them and why do we go to them?

Why do people host parties?

Simple. It's because we want to celebrate something. Be it a birthday, a new house (house-warmings), your friendship (dinner party catch-ups) or just that it is the end of the week. It may be to show off something you are proud of to the people you care about. It's the thought of getting together with friends or family to forget the stress of everyday life and to have some fun. And to many it's just a great excuse to drink and act like a kid again with it being completely acceptable.

Why do people go to parties?

Why do people prepare for hours to go to a place where the unexpected can be expected but the outcome is nonetheless the same? Simply put, it’s fun.

At events we find ourselves feeling emotions that we are not used to, we experience levels of arousal not familiar from day to day life, and we find ourselves doing things that we haven't really fully intended to do. This is why parties can be so much fun. They can be so stimulating that normal conventions of comportment may seem unnecessary or irrelevant, and at a really good party, people can get pretty crazy. Not you or me, of course, but those other people.

Every person goes to a party for the plain reason of having fun, it’s both acknowledged and practiced. It’s a sensorial experience and the setting is meant to heighten all five senses. In that particular moment in time, you forget who you’re supposed to be and the things you’re supposed to do, there’s no time but the present and you’re there to make the most of it.

Everyone wants to get away from their realities once in a while. In these settings, people don’t really care where you came from or what you’ve done. Your appearance, confidence and moves are the only basis of judgment — you get to be whoever you want to be.

Whether it’s to escape from your monotonous routines, fears or thoughts, the setting is a perfect platform for distraction from the lights to the hot guy or chick beside the bar.

After every party, there’s always a new story to tell. It can be something you’re proud of or something you deeply regret. However, no matter how euphoric a moment can be, you have to acknowledge that it’s only as good as it lasts. As said, it’s an escape — and you can’t escape forever.
